k i am a student.
In India - yup they should be given homework but the Indian education system needs way more polishing. Way more. Giving homeworks won't help students get better.
You have to do extra.
I would say yes but you need more to that.

Giving Home work is Ok. But Giving LOADS of homework is simply a burden to students.
Childhood is the stage of life full of enjoyment, without any tension. But if they get homework more than their capacity, How they will enjoy their life?
Education system is changing the definition of childhood & taking away their rights.
You are right, education system is really stealing the joyful and precious days of childhood.
Giving home work, to some extent it is good that the student gets more involved in the studies but giving loads of home work is not that good.
The students should be given practical knowledge rather than just completing their written notes.
Today there are many resourses regarding the students that can really help them more than books like audio-visual systems, organising educational toors etc.By practical knowledge a student can get full and clear knowledge on any topic.
So,the education system should take some steps to improve and polish their rules.

I dont like to see small kid having Heavy bag than their weight on their back...
Sweets kids have lot of pressure....
Now a day many kid play video game/ computer game they don’t play any sports.. Only their fingers are good but other part of body is out of shape...
I still remember up till 5th class/grade/standard i was cool student in my class ...than after 5th i stoped doing home-work .... & when i reached in my High secondary ... i was king of first bench... even my mam was scared of me..........even during my PG i use to sit on first bench and was not afraid to pass comment on any one in my class... No friends were sitting with me b'coz i was very naughty student in my class.
I had lived my life with lot of liberty ... but i was always scared of my exam.... so during exam time i always use to study... i was naughty but i always respected my mam & sir, i was funny so they were also laughing on my comment.... :D ...
No need to give Home-work....
I had also worked as lecturer in Post Graduation college, i can say .... If lecturer are good student don't need home work.... ;)
And Age is not a criteria to get an education
It me Once Who was Lecturer (Liberal)
From:- Sunilkumar
You are right [naughty]sunil, dont mind,as it is said by you;when I see small kids carring big school bags on their back even bigger than them I really feel very bad.Now-a-days there is so much pressure on the students, they have to attend school, complete their home work, projects, they have to have go for tution classes even as the studies are becoming more and more tougher than it used to be before.
The students dont get enough time to play that is why physically they are not properly developed, and when they get time they just play video games and other indoor games or watch television. This affect them very badly as their eye sight becomes dull and they have to carry big glasses on their small and sweet faces.
The children should be encouraged to do their studies and as well as they should be encouraged to play or do some physical activities so that they can develop in every aspect and every field of life.
"Children have neither past nor future; they enjoy the present, which very few of us do."

Coming generation is always more competitive but I don’t agree on this.. that studies are becoming more and more tougher than it used to be before....
when I was in Eight grade/class/standard at that time I had seen Mathematic book of eight grade of my elder sister and even my DAD ....the mathematics that they were studying was more tough .... :D
Now a Days student are getting more marks ...coz most of school and college are private so to make good reputation of institute in market... all sir/professor/lecturer/teacher gives more mark to the student of there institute....
I had studied in a government college I know there nobody care if you attain class or not.... if you don't write in exam you are fail and if you write in exam than also you will get less mark compare to other college student... because student of government college get marks of its own hard work.... In private college student get 10 - 20 % mark more than their calibers most of time this marks are donated to them by their tutor...:D
Taking Tuition by teacher, lecture etc. of college of those students which had right to get knowledge freely from them is wrong... they should be good enough to provide better education to the student in class only…
Some time teacher de-motivate good student in class those who don’t take their paid tuition.
But if any lecturer, sir, teacher, Professor etc. gives some part time lecture in some private institute other than their institute than that is not wrong.
Extra Classes should not be taken in school, taking extra class is hammering brain of student… teachers must complete their work as per the schedule. And school management should not ask them to take extra lecture.
India’s name is bad in sports so we should make compulsory for every student to participate in any one sports when they are in school and degree college.
No institute take sports seriously in India…:D
School Management & Teacher must do Home work … to make better India
DPS(Delhi Public School) is making biggest mistakes by dividing student of same class into different section ..depending upon their mark this is really foolish act… if student are more in school in one class then it is understandable making section of one class but student in them should not be separated on basis of their mark. Most of the school management thinks that student who are weak are depressed when they are between intelligent student... this thinking is totally wrong, We don't know when any person get interested in studies... I had seen many students who were considered as duffer by their teachers but they came at top when it was required....
By doing this school management dividing children not only on basis of knowledge but even on basis of caste because student who belong to ST, SC, economically backward, for whom reservation is there in our constitution are already weak.... so we are separating them from main stream from their childhood... this is ridiculous... I don’t know from were school management gets such idiotic ideas... And if intelligent student think that weaker student are not able to grasp the things as fast as them, than they should have patience because teacher have to carry all student together.
Suppose consider one class in which all student are having 70% marks that means all are intelligent... but if in one exam one student score 68% that means he should be shifted in next section...:D this will be very humiliating for the child who got 68%, child will be de-motivated & depressed by this.
So stop separating children on basis of their mark
I was good lecturer, student even shared their personal issue with me.. issue like their boy friends girl friends also .. ha ha…. But I left that job because I was not happy with the Education system …
It's me who give knowledge freely
Sunilkumar
This is very bad to discriminate students on the basis of their marks and caste.
School is known as a "TEMPLE OF KNOWLEDGE"a place where children get their education and get to know what is right and what is wrong in life.
A student goes to school to gain proper knowledge and to become a good citizen of a country and be a part in progressing the nation.
If he will be treated like this in schools what idea he would get about the society and people around him?
A child's mind is like a mirror whatever picture will be shown to him he would follow that in his whole life
Today teachers have become so much corrupt that they dont care about a childs future and only care about to make more money through tutions.
A teacher is who shows a right path to the students and if teacher will be corupted then what will he teach his students about ethics and honesty.
Whole education system need to be changed so that a child can get proper education and become a good citisen of a country.

Homework is needed in order for children to learn stuffs. They might sacrifice some of their childhood fun but will have fun when they grow up. THeir hardwork will finally pay up.
Yup and we should stop separating children on marks. Next person who separates children on marks in front of me will get smacked by me.

India1989, there is no fun after sacrifice our childhood in study only. You cannot play and do childish acts when you grow old. There is a lot of difference between evry stage of life. If stage one gone, you cannot achieve it again. Happiness and tension free life in childhood (http://www.indiabook.net/archives/category/kids-and-teens/), can't be attained later.
So keep these children to enjoy their life with their own will. Donot impose anything on them who takes away their precious moments of life.
Very true Indai 1989 that if the children will today sacrifice their fun moments then today they will definately get success in life, but today the education system is such that seems like burdern on young minds and as a result the young ones looses their joyful moments of childhood.
Our urge to education system and teachers is that please dont put so much of pressure on the children and try to bulid new techniques of learning in education that are not too pressurable on young minds and they could get the concept in a fast and proper way.

yeah i know but it shouldn't be like no homeworks. there should be homeworks but not that much.
Do you know friends that what is our sweetest and memorable phase of life??
Yes!! you guessed it right, the sweetest phase of our life is "CHILDHOOD". (http://www.himalyanindia.com/dir/Society/Issues/Children,_Youth_and_Family/)
We MISS IT a lot when we grow up.
"I miss my mother's bread
my mother's coffee
my mother's touch
and i miss my childhood
a day after day
and i cherish my life
because if i die
ill be ashamed of my mother's tears
take me mom if i came back one day
like a scarf to your neck
and cover my bones mom
with some grass
that has been baptised
under your pure heels
and tie me down with some cloth
that has been touched by your blessed hands
maybe ill become an angel
because i lost my strength
without your prayers
im old now so please
give me back childhood stars
so i can share the little birds
the road to their little nests"

In India Competition is too much so parent also gives more pressure to their child related to studies...
In India home-work is so much that child don't get time to do any other activity...
Once I was also child.... in my class I was average student some time I had performed below average.... But now I work in MNC as a consultant... I don’t think that home work had done anything for my today... I never did home work after my 4th standard....
================================================== ========
Something about My Post Graduation
When I was studying in first semester of my PG (Post Graduation), there were no lectures in my college. So most of my classmate studied with their Own in first semester & the result of our college was good than any other top rated college of our university....
But once our college had recruited lecturer for us in second semester the result was not good....
And in last semester of our PG we have to do some technical project in some company and people from industry have to give us mark… at that time again our college was on top as per results.
From this I come to know if liberty is given to student they perform well.
On Feb first 2006 I made a phone call to my Professor of PG, her name is Jyotika Doshi... she was very happy by knowing my progress and our all classmate .. she even told me to teach her what I know… as I work in MNC & I m expert of Database Administration … I said madam you don’t have to bother about database administration because my friend who is sitting beside you know database administration I had taught him every thing she said me really … & I said yes…
Note: - My Friend is lecture is same PG College where my Professor works now.
================================================== =========
When I see in my past, I know I had enjoyed my childhood & my teenage
If I see today’s environment than I am not eligible to get admission in any good school because my parent are not educated …. My mom is fourth pass and my dad is 9th pass.
Any Parent 4th and 9th pass cannot get admission for their child in any good school. Every one should know that my fourth pass mom had taught me A, B, C…. she studied in Hindi medium but I studied in English medium my parent never gave me pressure for studies but my dad always guided me as per the market that which field is good, he was knowing that its all depend on my caliber he always use to say son I know you have lot of potential & you can do good in any field.. He also said I know your mark is average mark because you don’t take your studies seriously.
Earlier People were saying I am son of Vishwanath (My Father) now every body say to my father that you are father of Sunil… :) , so school cannot decide the future of any child... children need proper guide ness and when they grow with proper guide ness they do with their own we don’t have to pressurize them.
Ravindranath Tagore… Never went to school…
Pressure kills creativity of child.
If Children are taught good moral than automatically they will come to know ... that studies are important to them as well as for nation. .
Note:- I am the only son but i had three elder sister they are as qualified as me..

The 3-year holiday called MCA
20 things common to all engg colleges:
1). The lecturers dont teach. The students dont study. The only guy who benefits is the one who owns the 'dhaba'(i.e. tea Stall) next to the college.
2). Rules are made to be broken.
3). Promises are made to be broken.
4). Deadlines are made to be extended...ALWAYS!
5). Guys always think the chics in the college next lane are more beautiful.
5).The geeks are the most pampered lot during the internal exams.
6).The lab assistants are the most respected people(during the lab exams i.e)
7).The watchmen are the people most bribed.
8).The HOD (Head of Department) is the person most respected(heights of sycophancy here).
9).The principal is the person most abused and insulted(behind the back i.e)
10).Dropping subjects is 'cool'.(arre yaar..drop the idea of dropping subjects plzz).
11).There is always a lecturer in the college who cant speak proper 'english'.
12). Night-out is the second most important tool to ace the exams.
13).The most important tool..the bhramastra..is the 'chit ' in which the words can be understood only by the person who wrote them(in most of the cases i.e)
14).The freshers are the most sought after..be it in the canteen, the 'free' periods or for completing the records, assignments.
15).The second-years are the ones with the 'I am the don-of-the-college' feeling.
16).The third years are the ones with the 'so-many-backlogs' feeling and the poor souls get down to studying after bossing around in the college for so long.but the fun still continues .
17).The Last sem have no connection with the college whatsoever...with no interest in ragging, pulling each other`s legs, the bday parties, the bday bums et al which they enjoyed so much till now.All they want is a good placement and a '1st-class' tag attached to their memo.
19).The two years are spent in cursing the college, the people there, the system et al.
20).But towards the end of the Last Sem ,people tend to feel nostalgic abt the pure unadulterated fun they have had for 3 years. Now the very system they disliked, the very canteen they cursed, the time that they spent there, the bday bums they suffered..all these seem like heaven to them.
Enjoy ....

I'm a undergraduate in china. China have same phenomenon in this issue. Students have too many homework. Thay have no time to play outdoor game.
They didn't want to make friends and make physical movement. It's very serious in urban area. Their parents compel them to study piano, drawing, english and math etc in the spare time. The only enjoyment for them is video game or PC game. Now the myopia and hunchback is very populars among students. Our media even report a case that a students kill a teacher due to the heavy study pressure. I feel it's very sad.
I think teachers shouldn't to give many paper homework to students. And the style of homework shouldn't be constrain in writing. It include many style. Like physical action, outdoor experimentation or environmental observation etc.

well it is hard like that in india too. but the students have to suffer a bit but not like as hard as u. that is one of the reasons that china is best at almost everything isn't it? well it is that pressure that makes some chinese some of the best athletes in the world. for instance, the olympics

May be it is one of the reasons. But there are many negative effects in the development of next generation. Everyone know china is very good at the study and copy of advanced technology. We aren't good at the innovation of new technology. I think one of the important reason is the rigid educated system and heavy pressure snuffed out the creativity of our childrens. Now the innovation is very critical in development of a nation. So we must change the educated system and lessen the pressure of students. Interest is most important propeller of innovation. We can't snuff out the interest of next generation. Do you think so?

Well you cannot say studies in China is harder then India. I think it is almost the same. But no need to take pride in it. This is destroying what we are. They are making something out of us which we are not. So we should try to change this system as fast as possible.

On this forum every one was knowing that i was working as consultant with one of the top rated Software Service based company of India... but now i had left that job .... After leaving my job i went to my home in Ahmedabad... there i Meet again my Madam Jyotika Doshi and my Friend Mr. Shah .... they told me to give some guidence and to share my experience of Industry with the student of my university, about Database management and IT in Corporate sector....so they arrange my guest lecture for Student of PG... On 4th August 2006 i shared my experience with the student of my own university ... it was really honour and chance given to me by my Teacher/Professor to give some Idea about Corporate sector...
Student really enjoyed my lecture i can say this .... coz i got this feed back from my friend Mr.shah as we are good friend he is not diplomate with me....
I am the only one out of all student of my class who gave some thing to the student of my own university .... for this guest lecture i was not taking money but my Mam told me to take money coz they always use to give money for guest lecture to people of Industry...
There were many student in my university but i am one who went back to guide todays student of my university.
Now i am in DELL it is MNC which rank 31 in fortune ... before joining Dell i do have offer of CTS (Cognizant Technologies Services) , UAE Airways Job location dubai, Merc Parmacutical job location singapore & Wipro but i selected offer of DELL.. I selected offer of Dell not because of money ... DELL is giving me less than UAE Airways, MERC, CTS & Wipro... but in Dell i am going to work on some technologies which will be helpful for me in future ... and Uptil now HR policy of Dell is nice.
In my college no home work was given to me to guide my junior in future but i did.... so this things comes with feeling to help.
Home work is of least important.... Proper guidence is required.....
People should know that no one came to guide me in my college... and the day i cleared my Post Graduation there was big episode of 11th september .... trade building of New York.... which effect over all Indian IT market.
What i was not able to get at my time... other should get... my coming generation should get.... this the way human being can progress... only then i can be happy...

Homework should be given but it should be helpful for students to improve their knowledge, most of the teachers give homework just because they couldn’t complete their syllabus on time, they try to complete by giving loads of homework to kids. Most of the students do home work just to satisfy their teachers or to avoid punishment, they never try to learn from home work.
To come over this lack of teaching from teachers my friends’ kids have opted for online assessment tool provided by 24x7guru.com. It’s a web-based tool which helps students to strengthen their academic foundation.

I agree with aarti, sunilkumar and megrisoft. Indian education system has come to a standstill. All it tries to actually inculcate is "mugging" abilities in students. even the politician Rahul Gandhi recently pointed out and said, "Indian education system does not encourage to ask questions." It is so very true. Be it the grand institutions like the IIT's, the IIM's or any other institutes, the focus is only on cramming and if anything apart from that, then it comes to "respecting the teachers". India has always depended upon the falsity that "seniority is always right". If it's a teacher then more so.
I think the western system is much more moderate and encouraging. There, the college students are allowed to choose most of the courses and that is done on prior assessment of the professors through websites. There, the students have a say and more freedom. Here it's all gibberish.
I have launched up a website for rating and reviewing teachers http://www.myfaveteacher.com. I invite all the contributors for this topic to do pay a visit and give some feedback.
