It is one of the grandest Muslim festivals, and is also known as Bakrid. The Id-ul-Azha commemorates the ordeal of Hazrat Ibrahim, who had been put to a terrible test by God when he was asked to sacrifice whatever was dearest to him and he decided to sacrifice the life of his son.
This is celebrated on the tenth day of Zilhijja, when the Haj (http://www.himalyanindia.com/dir/Society/Religion_and_Spirituality/Islam/Pilgrimages/Hajj_and_Umrah/) celebrations at Mecca are rounded off by the sacrifice of goats or camels. In India, too, goats and sheep are sacrificed all over the country and prayers are offered.
People embrace one another out of sheer joy and greet each other Hindus also participate in it and offer their good wishes to their Muslim (http://www.opendirectory.in/Society_and_Culture/Religion/Islam/) friends and well-wishers.
