The new study has found that Kashmir could face a massive and deadly earthquake in the coming 50 years. The earthquake could be far more maganitude compared to the recent quake that killed more than 73000 people in PoK and around 1500 in Jammu and Kashmir.
Roger Bilham who has been working in quake-affected areas of Pakistan for the past two months, said that a huge amount of energy was stored in the faultline in the Kashmir region, but it was unevenly distributed, and this had the possibility of triggering massive earthquakes (http://www.himalyanindia.com/dir/Science/Earth_Sciences/Geophysics/Earthquakes/) .
The nature of aftershocks the region experienced after the quake was also a matter of concern. It also showed that the Kashmir region could have something like a magnitude eight earthquake.
The pressure is building up around the south-eastern tip. In other words, it means that should the faultline slip in the south-east, the shockwave is very likely to travel towards the plains of Punjab - possibility extending down to the historic city of Lahore.
