Leprosy (http://www.indiabook.com/page/2652.html) is such a threatning disease many people are affected by this disease in India and today India has eliminated leprosy.
The government announced on Monday that it had eliminated leprosy but said that it would take 20 years to eradicate the disease from India.

Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said here that"India has eliminated leprosy and the next target is eradication. We have come a long way since 1955 (when the National Leprosy Control Programme was launched)," said Ramadoss at a press conference on Leprosy Day. "It will take a minimum of 20 years. It will take that long since the incubation period is a long time," he added.

What's the difference between elimination and eradication?

When a disease is Eradicated, it’s gone forever, from everywhere, so you no longer need either intervention or monitoring. Smallpox is a disease that has been eradicated.

Elimination of a disease involves more of a regional concept. When a disease (http://blogs.indiabook.com/category/health-fitness/) is eliminated, you no longer need treatment or intervention in that area. But you must still maintain surveillance for it, because it’s out there somewhere.

THanks for explaining. So that's good that leprosy is being eliminated but 20% of our children are malnutritioned. We should do something about them.

It was said in HDI index that only 35% of people in India has proper access to sanitation. We should work on that too.
