He is unknown in India, but one of the most famous Indians in China. He came to China during the Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and served as a doctor, saving thousands of Chinese soldiers' lives. He had a son with a Chinese nurse, native of Dalian, in northeast China (Manchuria). They had a son named "YinHan" (which is a combination of Chinese characters for India and the Han Chinese people.

The Chinese government issued a special stamp in his honor in the 1980's. Last year, 200,000 Chinese visited his grave in Shijiazhuang, to pay homage to this great Indian. The Chinese are eternally in debt to this great man who helped fight against the inhuman Japs.

During Zhu Rongji's (former Chinese PM) visit to India in 2002, he requested to the Indian PM to visit the suriving sister of Kotnis, to present her of Mao Zedong's inscription of Kotnis, which reads: "The army has lost a helping hand, the nation has lost a friend. Let us always bear in mind his internationalist spirit.."

He is very famous in China. His chinese name is 'Kelihua'. I think more than 50% chinese know him as his name appeared in the chinese school textbook since 1949. For remember his deed, one medical college was named by using his name. The college's website is http://www.kdhyxy.com/ and his photograph is on the first page.

Seems no any Indian friend care about him. Too sad....
He should be Indian's national hero and icon and be recognized by the whole world.

Before Dr Dwarkanath Kotnis, only two Indians had made their mark on China. Gautam Buddha - the founder of his religion, and Bodhidharma, the monk who had brought martial arts to China. All three have left a legacy that can be built upon to bring eternal peace in the shadows of the Himalayas.

There was a widely known film in the 1950s or so about him in India named "Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani" which translates to "The Eternal Story of Dr. Kotnis".

Indeed, Its a great pleasure to know that a person having Indian roots is so much respected in China.
But, indeed it is sad that Indians have just totally neglected such a great person.
